Watch cricket highlights – India vs Sri Lanka, in the Compaq Cup played on September 12, 2009.

Scoreline: SL 307/6 Jayasuriya 98 (79), Kandamby 91 no (73) | Harbhajan 10-37-1
India lose by 139 runs (168 all out) Rahul Dravid 47 (56) | Angelo Mathews 6-20-6

Post Match :

Dhoni: “It was one of the worst days, starting in the season. Frankly, I have nothing to say right now … they played very well … Sanath batted well and Matthews bowled really. The only thing that went well for us was the warm-up before the game! It was one of the worst days. [asked whether playing second day in a row] it’s demanding but that’s the way it goes.”

Sangakkara: “I thought we played really well. It was great to see Sanath coming back. It was a good solid start and the middle-order came into the game. The best time to be critical is when you win and I think we lost a few quick wickets in the middle. Every game is important. Every win you take momentum and confidence into the next game. We have to do it again on Monday. It’s the process that matters to us. [On Angelo] He is a very solid player .. he is the allrounder we are looking for .. he has a great future. Talent is one thing but real hard work and consistency is another matter. He is on the right track, I am sure he won’t get carried away and continue to work hard.”

Man of the Match Angelo : “It was a dream spell. I was just trying to land the ball on the correct spot and the ball did the rest. Asked whether he is a batting or a bowling allrounder, he says with a laugh, ” I am a genuine allrounder!”

Yusuf Pathan is the Man of the Match

Dilshan : "I thought 170 was defendable. We started well, picked some early wickets, but both Yusuf and Irfan played really well. We conceded too many extras, that eventually made the difference."

Dhoni: "Their spinners bowled really well, and although our batsmen struggled, it’s a good learning curve for them. There are lots of youngsters in our team and stiff matches like these is a great learning experience."

Result India won by 3 wickets (with 4 balls remaining)

India vs Sri Lanka, Only T20, Live Cricket Streaming at Colombo (RPS), Feb 10 2009

T20 world champions will meet the hosts for only T20 after winning 5 match ODI series 4-1. India will be favorites but one can’t really understimate Sri Lanka, they are a good side and if Jayasuriya clicks,  then anything is very much possible.

Hate to see one sided T20 matches, you got only 20 overs each and if one can’t really give their best, prolly they should think if they are really fit to play T20. Let’s hope for exciting contest.

Let us head out to the middle, where the two captains are standing with L Siva and the match referee Chris Broad. Dilshan has won the toss and he wants to have a bat. Mahendra Singh Dhoni isn’t too perturbed at having to field first. He can’t put a finger on what a par score is. Zaheer Khan replaces L Balaji. India have handed Ravindra Jadeja his Twenty20 debut. No Dilhara Lokuhettige, but Chamara Silva, Malinga Bandara and Lasith Malinga are back. Dilshan will not keep wickets, as that role goes to Indika de Saram.

India vs Sri Lanka 5th ODI Highlights

February 9th, 2009 Comments Off Posted in India, Match Highlights, One Day Match, Sri Lanka, Wealthnsurance Cup

Watch cricket highlights of the 5th ODI – Sri Lanka vs India – played at Colombo on February 8, 2009.

Scoreline: SL – 320. Tilakaratne Dilshan 97 Kumar Sangakkara 84 (70), Sanath Jayasuriya 37. India 252 all out. Yuvraj Singh 73 (62), Ravindra Jadeja 60, MS Dhoni 53

The first half of the SL video has a slightly scrambled video signal, but some entertaining DD commentary to make up for it.

Sri Lanka, trailing 0-4 in the series, won their first toss and showed what they can do batting first. Ok, the Indian bowling attack wasn’t the usual bunch, but Sri Lanka did enough to show that the tosses probably didn’t help them compete at their best in this series. The Sri Lankan target-setting however came apart through a collapse of the middle order with 4 wickets falling in the space of 6 deliveries.

The Indian chase had hiding written across it except when Yuvraj Singh was on song, heading towards his 2nd 100 in the series after his 117 in the 3rd ODI. Ravindra Jadeja was one of the players thrown up by the IPL, especially in the Rajasthan vs Mumbai game. Today, he might not have looked seriously threatening, but was definitely unflustered and calm in his debut. Dhoni got another 50. At the start of it, he looked like he just might pull out the MS Dhoni of yore, but it eventually petered out into a meaningless knock. He also displayed his own strange interpretation of the Batting powerplay as he has done through the series.

For Tendulkar fans, who missed him in the last 2 games, Yuvraj in the post-match presentation invoked him by dedicating his Man of the Series Award to his guruji and his mum.

India vs Sri Lanka 4th ODI Highlights

February 6th, 2009 Comments Off Posted in India, Match Highlights, One Day Match, Sri Lanka, Wealthnsurance Cup

Watch India vs Sri Lanka 4th ODI highlights from Colombo, played on February 5, 2009. India won the toss and batted first.

Scoreline: India 332/5. Gautham Gambhir 150 (147). MS Dhoni 94, Suresh Raina 49 no. SL 216 – Sangakkara 56. India lead 4-0 this series and recorded their 9th win in a row following the 5-0 ODI win over England.

A day of 90s in world cricket. Earlier, Kevin Pietersen was out for 97 vs West Indies.

Was a bit surprised when Dhoni came out today at the fall of Sehwag – Rohit Sharma was picked in the side after resting Sachin Tendulkar (ridiculous decision, cos according to Law, no series should go by without viewers being given an opportunity to watch a Tendulkar special). Anyway, Sharma might as well have been given an opportunity to play a long one. The highlights here will never convey the true picture of any innings. While Dhoni did get 94 at more than a run a ball, with a couple of sixes included, it was frankly quite boring to watch. The intent basically appeared to be singles and Gautham Gambhir who scored at a lesser run-rate than Dhoni was more entertaining. For a naturally attacking batsman like Dhoni, his current game-plan of ensuring a win everytime he bats can be dangerous. It won’t be long before a smart captain throttles him when he just walks in – in fact, we’ve seen this happen several times including the IPL 2008 – Pragyan Ojha apart from his bag of domestic wickets, has primarily made it to the team cos of the web he was able to cast on Dhoni during the IPL. Sometimes, one tends to forget the basic premise of sport – win, win, win is a deceptive concept that has overridden the underlying premise – to entertain. It’s for this very reason that one will always remember Adam Gilchrist whereas Michael Bevan might have already faded away from memory.

Enough of that.

Suresh Raina today, finally played like he did in the early part of his career – that he came late in the innings definitely helped him make his choice of play.

The SL chase was the 96 World Cup stuff, with Dilshan doing a Kaluwitharana alongside Sanath Jayasuriya. Entertaining as it was, there were moments there when I felt Irfan Pathan’s career could be put on permanent hold. But he did get Jayasuriya with some smart bowling and added another two. It’s pretty hard for him to break into the team permanently though – the only two players he could possibly replace are his brother Yusuf or Praveen Kumar and neither look like making way at this point.

Kulasekara played a few stunning shots at the end, but the SL chase came apart as it has done through this series in the middle overs.

Pre-Game: India have already won this 2009 series, and lead 3-0. As far as I’m concerned, can’t wait to see Sachin Tendulkar turn it on – that’s if the umpires let him. Update: Well, apparently the team management’s brain has gone into overdrive and they’ve rested him and Zaheer. Rohit Sharma and Irfan Pathan are the replacements. So interesting viewing ahead, anyhow.

Indian coach Gary Kirsten remarks about how current India team can win matches even after resting few key players could have hurt Sri Lankan players ego and today is a great chance to prove Kirsten wrong. India lead the series 3-0 (Not to mention they already won it) decided to rest both Sachin and Zaheer, to give opportunity to other players on the bench and why not, when things are going good every move you make will look like a gr8 move.  Sri Lanka has too many things to sort out but important of them all is their batting, they need some big partnerships especially in high scoring matches (> 275).

India vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI Highlights

February 4th, 2009 Comments Off Posted in India, Match Highlights, Sri Lanka, Wealthnsurance Cup

Watch Cricket Highlights – India vs Sri Lanka – 3rd ODI played at Colombo on February 3rd 2009.

Scoreline: India 363. Centuries from Yuvraj Singh 117 (95) and Virender Sehwag 116 (90). SL: 216 all out. Kumar Sangakkara 83 (82) Mahela Jayawardene 30.

Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag at their most primal. Even if you account for the miserable Sri Lankan fielding today, some of the shots played today are probably reserved only for these two players. Tendulkar got yet another poor LBW – third successive umpiring flaw in a row. The umpiring continued to clown around with Sehwag looking plumb on one occasion. Tendulkar however soon settled down in the balcony to watch the two best players in the world to have been wholesomely influenced by him, entertain.

Dhoni found himself today in the ideal situation to launch after the fall of Yuvraj and Sehwag, but yet again pulled out just one boundary in his knock of 35 (45). The only reason Indian didn’t flounder away the two sensational knocks was because of Yusuf Pathan 59 (38). Just think, India added only 98 runs in the last 15 overs at a run rate lesser than what was current at the time.

The Sri Lankan chase did have its moments particularly when Sangakkara and Mahela pulled out their best recent form. Muralitharan equaled Wasim Akram for the highest number of ODI wickets when he got Yuvraj today. And that was pretty much it.

PreGame: With India having taken a 2-0 lead and Sri Lanka’s apparent dependence on Jayasuriya swinging their fortunes, it’s going to be interesting to see if Lanka can keep the series alive by winning this game.

India vs Sri Lanka 2nd ODI Highlights

February 2nd, 2009 Comments Off Posted in India, Match Highlights, One Day Match, Sri Lanka

Cricket Highlights: Watch Sri Lanka vs India 2nd ODI highlights from the Premadasa, Colombo played on January 31, 2009.

Scoreline: India 256/9. Yuvraj Singh 66. Virender Sehwag 42 (26). Sri Lankan chase falls short (very close shave though) – 241. Kandamby 93 no, Jayawardene 52.

Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh turned up big time for India after Sachin Tendulkar was given a second poor decision in a row. The flaws with decisions continued with Yuvraj given LBW after a huge edge onto pads. The Indian innings fell away after that. Dhoni has played important steadying knocks in recent times, but I’d rather see India lose and Dhoni play like he did in the 1st year of his career than see him potter around for 20 odd and then mess up the batting powerplay. All the aggressive intent in the powerplay seemed to be from Yusuf Pathan and he was eventually run out because of unnecessary pressure created by MS on himself. The eventual target was only reached because Zaheer Khan and Praveen Kumar hung around.

It’s quite strange why Praveen Kumar isn’t a permanent member of the ODI squad. I can’t remember a single poor game that he’s had, and there’s something about him that tells you major at-the-death exploits with the bat are around the corner. Today he was painfully economical while bowling and strangled the initial overs of the Lankan chase.

Muralitharan bowled beautifully – most of his overs were at Yuvraj who was on a roll and yet couldn’t really get him away. Murali even bowled a maiden batting powerplay over.

The Sri Lankan chase was hard done with plenty of drama in the opening overs – Dilshan trying to go nuts and quick wickets. Jayawardene and Kandamby rebuilt but the process was onerous for a good part. Jayawardene though, looked determined to exorcise his 94 vs India in 2008 that had lost partners. But this time, he fell way short. Kandamby meanwhile was hanging around without making too much of an impression other than that he looked like a very slightly trimmer Ranatunga. But he would later almost pull off one of the finest-paced innings in recent times. Unfortunately – a crucial loss of strike for the 49th over after Murali was runout off the last ball of the 48th over, a brilliant 49th by Ishanth Sharma, loss of partners – all conspired to thwart Lanka despite amazingly coming close.

Don’t miss a Yuvraj Singh glare at Umpire Gamini after a close Kandamby LBW was denied off Zaheer (Yuvraj having got a poor one while batting).

There was also an amazing ‘undislodgeable bail’ thing happening today. Twice the ball crashed into the stump and the bails remained unmoved. This is something that has happened during the Australia-SA series also and possibly has to do with the stumps being deeply entrenched. Why the stumps are stuck so deep in is worth wondering about – perhaps the stump-mike and cam is related?

Also don’t miss Arun Lal’s comments when Ishanth Sharma and Suresh Raina crash into each other – “Yes, yes, bodies touching, balls there, in between.” Only Arun Lal would say that on air. In fact Lal was quite frisky tonight – when Ishanth was hit by a nut-like object thrown from the crowd Arun remarked – “Dispensed with one of his nuts

Pre-Game: With India 1-0 up after their win in the 1st ODI, it’s going to be interesting to see how Sri Lanka react – Mendis in particular. Most of the Indian batsmen looked comfortable (relative to the 2008 series) playing him, and Sehwag will be back with Tendulkar at the top. Unfortunately Rohit Sharma sits out, but a personal favourite, Praveen Kumar will be back today.
