Dhoni not playing the upcoming Srilanka Test Series

July 8th, 2008 Comments Off Posted in Cricket News

dhoni.jpgPreviously while during the Asia Cup Series Dhoni said "We were a bit disappointing, but one of the reasons for it is that we have played cricket for 36 of the last 84 hours," after the press conference of match with Bangladesh. For this Rajiv Shukla, the vice-president of the Indian board, has responded to Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s complaint saying "If a player wants rest, he can inform the board and we’ll be happy to send replacements."

Shukla referred to the case of Sachin Tendulkar to make his point. "Sachin had informed us well in advance and hence he was not picked." Keeping this in mind Mahendra Singh Dhoni had informed BCCI that he need some rest. Ratnakar Shetty, BCCI’s chief administrative officer said Dhoni, India’s ODI captain, had personally conveyed the message. "Yes, he (Dhoni) has told the board that he would like to rest for the Test series against Sri Lanka", Shetty said.

So Dinesh Karthik is likely to replace Dhoni to do wicketkeeping duties for the series. Karthik last played in the Bangalore Test against Pakistan last December, which Dhoni had to skip due to an ankle injury. Karthik had played as a specialist opener in Test series in Bangladesh and England last year, and in the home Tests against Pakistan. He was picked in the squad for the Australia tour, but didn’t play any of the Tests.
