Cricket Highlights: South Africa vs Australia Sydney Test, 1st day’s play.

Scoreline: Australia won the toss. 267/6. Michael Clarke 73. Simon Katich 47.

The morning expectedly surrounded Matthew Hayden, who took it easy and played a few good shots in between. But then, that’s typical of his current run of formlessness. The shots haven’t really been missing. It’s the bludgeoning strokes that have worked against him and that’s how his innings yet again ended today 31 (78).

Ponting after his fantastic 99 in the 2nd test was out first ball, and South Africa basically chipped away not really letting any of the Australian batsmen get beyond the 30s. Only Michael Clarke got beyond the half century mark: 73 no in the company of Mitchell Johnson who pulled out a couple of stunning shots in his brief stay. Clarke was lucky to get away after being dropped by Hashim Amla in his favourite portion of day’s play – towards the end.

Andrew McDonald, the new guy in place of THE Andrew, showed his preference for the onside in his brief stay, but more importantly gave non-Australians a full glimpse of his face when he had his helmet knocked off by Morkel. If cricketers were judged by the look above their neck, one would say, Symonds will be back soon.
